The desktop app

Turn a Windows PC, a Mac or a Linux box into a Wunderframe screen: pairing, the control window, settings and updates.

The Wunderframe desktop app turns a Windows PC, a Mac mini or a Linux box into a screen. It does everything a kiosk browser needs by hand: it starts at login, runs full screen, hides the cursor, keeps the display awake, and keeps the program and its media on the disk so it plays offline.

Install it

Your Wunderframe contact gives you the installer for your system: .msi or .exe for Windows, .dmg for macOS, .deb or .AppImage for Linux. Install it as usual, on the account the screen signs in with.

  • Windows needs the WebView2 runtime, built into Windows 11.
  • Linux plays video through GStreamer: install gstreamer1.0-libav and gstreamer1.0-plugins-good and -bad, or video stays black.

Pair it

On first start the app shows a pairing code. Enter it under Stages → Pair a screen and the screen starts by itself.

The Wunderframe desktop player window showing 'Ready to pair' with the code J5SEFN, a countdown, and three steps: open www.wunderframe.com, go to Stages and choose Pair a screen, enter this code.

On first start the app shows a pairing code. Enter it under Stages → Pair a screen and the screen starts by itself.

  1. Start the app

The control window opens on Screen with Ready to pair and a six-character code.

  2. Enter the code

In Wunderframe, open Venue → Stages, press Pair a screen, pick the stage and type the code.

  3. It plays

The player opens as its own full-screen window. The control window now says Playing and the stage’s name.

Use a player link instead pastes the stage’s player link, or a wall panel’s own link, instead of a code.

The control window

The control window is the app’s dashboard. Its sidebar shows the screen’s name, its stage and a status dot, then three pages: Screen, Settings and About. Screen shows one state at a time:

  • Ready to pair — the code and the steps.
  • Playing the stage — with Open fullscreen player, and Show on display 2 for each extra display.
  • Offline — playing saved content.
  • Waiting for network.
  • Link revoked — with Pair again.

While the player runs full screen, press Ctrl + Shift + S (Cmd + Shift + S on a Mac) to bring the control window back. A playing screen ignores a plain quit; Quit the player is on About.

Once paired, the desktop app plays the stage’s program like any other screen.

Settings

Settings: the server, start at login, full screen, and how the screen is mounted.

The desktop player’s Settings page with the server choice Production (selected), Dev and Local, switches for Start at login and Fullscreen player, and the Rotation choice 0°, 90°, 180°, 270°.

Settings: the server, start at login, full screen, and how the screen is mounted.

  • Server — leave it on Production. Dev and Local are for developers.
  • Start at login — on by default, so the screen comes back after a power cut.
  • Fullscreen player — off only for testing in a window.
  • Screen — rotation, volume, render quality and startup animation. Keep my changes here stops Devices from changing them; see Changed on the device.

Switching the server asks first, because the screen has to pair again with the new server.

A confirmation dialog over the desktop player: 'Switch to Production? The screen will get its pairing code from www.wunderframe.com.' with Cancel and Switch buttons.

About and support

About shows what support needs: versions, the device id and the server, with one click to the logs.

The desktop player’s About page listing the app and core version, renderer, device ID, server Production · www.wunderframe.com and panel, with buttons Open logs folder, Report a problem and Quit the player.

About shows what support needs: versions, the device id and the server, with one click to the logs.

Report a problem collects the facts and the last lines of the log in a dialog with Copy — paste them into your message to support. Open logs folder opens the full log. Unpair sends the screen back to its pairing code.

What it plays

  • Pictures, video files, fonts and sound from its disk cache, offline too. Music and video soundtracks play through the computer’s own sound output.
  • HLS TV channels. Multicast channels need an Android TV or Raspberry Pi player on the TV network.
  • Live presenters and cast zones, like every screen.

A desktop and an Android TV can be panels of the same wall: they keep in step over the local network the same way.

Updates

The player inside the app updates itself in the background and switches at the daily restart, or at once with Update player on Devices. A new version of the app itself is installed with its installer, over the old one; the pairing is kept. Update the app on Devices does not reach desktop apps yet.
